Abstract

Reading comprehension is an integral component in the educational system as it is the foundation of the learners to understand and comprehend all aspects around him. To assess the effectiveness of the project READ @ HOME in upgrading the reading performance of the grade 5 learners of Mabantad North Elementary School during the covid-19 pandemic. This study used the experimental research design, among 30 learners which was equally and randomly assigned into experimental and control group. The standard reading comprehension was used which was also patterned to the learning objectives of the 3rd and 4th grading period for the school year 2020-202. Descriptive statistics were used in the analysis of the scores of the participants and the parties, t-test was also utilized in determining the effectiveness of the intervention at the level 0.05 and the cohens-d test was also used to determine the effect size of the said intervention. Results shows that there is an increase in the scores of the learners in the experimental group before and after the intervention and also significant difference on the pre-test and post-test scores of the experimental group was noted (p˃0.05). Further analysis shows that there is a large effect of the intervention on the experimental group which yielded to 0.93 as the cohens-d result would indicate. It is therefore safe to say that the project READ @ HOME is effective in upgrading the reading performance of the grade v learners of Mabantad North Elementary School.
